“Art Director Tamotsu Ejima: Use Your Hands”
Tamotsu Ejima

Tamotsu Ejima, the man who laid the foundation for quality magazines in Japan.

While attending Tokyo University of the Arts, Ejima, along with Masayoshi Nakajo ("Hanatsubaki") and Shigeo Fukuda ("Japan's Escher"), was known as one of the "Three Musketeers" and frequently won contests, earning a lot of prize money. Ejima later established an original style for high-quality women's magazines as the art director for "Mrs.", "High Fashion", and "Soken."

With a swift follow-up, he launched the legendary "NOW," where he served as the de facto editor-in-chief, and charged forward into the extreme reaches of men's magazines, which no one had ever seen before. Eventually, many enthusiastic followers became creators themselves, and Ejima himself took on the role of art director for the Japanese edition of "PLAYBOY," continuing to illuminate the path for quality magazines aimed at men in Japan.

Meanwhile, in the world of advertising, his work on "Kaiseki Suntory" and other projects had a significant impact on society, powerfully demonstrating the value of the art director's existence.

This book is a definitive edition that compiles the great work and unforgettable persona of Tamotsu Ejima, who established an editorial design landmark in Japan's post-war magazine history, with numerous valuable illustrations, the voices of those involved, and a long interview with Ejima himself.
